AI Powered Society

8 Conclusions

The world is undergoing a massive phase transition that will lead to a clash between science and religion in shaping the millennials’ world. This transition is expected to be brutal because the Homo sapiens will have to face the reality that when machines began to perform better and better in terms of sensory perceptions and physical strength it did not bruise human ego; machines out-performing humans in intelligence was deemed impossible. The writing on the wall appeared with Alan Turing’s paper in 1936 when he showed performing arithmetic could be completely mechanized. In less than a century actual computers are now showing that human intelligence can be mechanized too. An upheaval in human civilization has just started. It may eventually end with the Homo sapiens speciating into one or more intellectually superior species, perhaps more determined and better endowed to understand the Universe within a rational, axiomatic framework. It may be more effective to let human fascination for religion run its course rather than oppose it! Max Planck, the father of quantum mechanics had discovered this secret in the development of physics:

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it. – Max Planck, surveying his own career in his Scientific Autobiography.

The fate of existing religions will follow likewise. In the meantime, the millennials will be busy building an entirely new socio-politico-economic structure from the rubble the AI induced phase transition will create. They will be busy deciding the extent to which the state should be involved in providing education, healthcare, transport, and social security; pondering over the amorphous nature and fragility of big businesses; resolving the widening gap and social rift between the rich and the poor; managing a sudden rise in unemployment, the loss of hope and dignity of the unemployed and the declining global empathy for immigrants. Sporadic employment and underemployment will be the rule for the millennials. The quality of most jobs will debilitate the human spirit and his dignity. These issues are rarely discussed, unreliably measured, and ignored in policy making.
